What makes a good life? Lessons from the longest study on happiness

As I move towards the octogenarian stage of my life, I am encouraged by this TED talk by Robert Waldinger who shares the lessons of a 75-year-old study on adult development.  In this talk, he shares three important lessons learned from the study as well as some practical, old-as-the-hills wisdom on how to build a fulfilling, long life.

His message helps explain the importance of strong relationships in life.  In an earlier blog, I mentioned a group of men that are life long friends.  I was reminded of them as I listened to Waldinger share the lessons about the importance of relationships.

And I reflected on some other groups and individuals that I regularly engage with . . . . the Bagel Brothers who meet three times a week to share coffee and a bagel; my former partners in Arthur Young (now EY) who I meet with every other month or so to catch up and share a lunch; the fellow mentors at SMU who are committed to share their time and talent with the newest crop of aspiring MBA candidates; those who I mentor and coach in their search for roles where they can become the best version of themselves; my fellow parishioners at St. Ann’s who help each other in our faith journey . . . . . and most importantly, my wife, Judi, and the family we created and enjoy every day.

Every team you engage with is an opportunity to develop the relationships that Waldinger speaks of.  Enjoy his TED talk and reflect on the sources of your happiness.  It will influence how you spend your time and the dynamics of the teams you engage with.
